A 5ft (150cm) tree usually suits a ceiling height from about 1.9m (6ft 3in) once you allow for the stand and a topper. Check the highlighted row below, and measure where the tree will actually stand.
| Ceiling height | Imperial | Tree that fits (with stand & topper) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 2.1m | under 6ft 11in | Tabletop tree, or a 4ft–5ft tree | Shop 2ft–4ft |
| 2.1m – 2.3m | 6ft 11in – 7ft 6in | 5ft – 6ft tree | Shop 5ft |
| 2.3m – 2.45m | 7ft 6in – 8ft | 6ft tree (the typical modern UK home) | Shop 6ft |
| 2.45m – 2.7m | 8ft – 8ft 10in | 6.5ft – 7ft tree | Shop 7ft |
| 2.7m – 3m | 8ft 10in – 9ft 10in | 7.5ft – 8ft tree (many period homes) | Shop 8ft+ |
| Over 3m | over 9ft 10in | 9ft – 10ft+ tree | Shop 8ft+ |
Rule of thumb: tree height = ceiling height minus 25–30cm, to leave room for the stand (which lifts the tree a few centimetres) and your topper. Always check the stated height of the exact tree you buy.
