Christmas decorations

Deck the halls (and the tree)

Baubles, toppers, garlands, wreaths, stockings, nativity scenes, table centrepieces and outdoor inflatables: everything you need to dress the house for Christmas.

How to decorate a Christmas tree like a pro

  1. Fluff first. Spend time separating and shaping every branch of an artificial tree. It makes more difference than any decoration.
  2. Lights next. Weave lights from the trunk outwards along each main branch, starting at the bottom. See our Christmas lights guide.
  3. Topper. Fit the star or angel before the baubles, while you can reach without knocking anything off.
  4. Garland, beads or ribbon. Drape in loose swags or spirals from top to bottom.
  5. Baubles, biggest first. Place large baubles deep in the branches for depth, then medium, then small ones near the tips.
  6. Fillers and favourites. Finish with picks, sprays and the special family decorations front and centre.

How many baubles do I need?

A popular rule of thumb is around 10–15 baubles per foot of tree for a well-dressed look: roughly 60–90 for a 6ft tree. Go higher for a glamorous, packed tree; lower if you love a minimal Scandi look.

Choosing a colour scheme

  • Traditional: red, gold and green with warm white lights.
  • Winter white: silver, white and pale blue on a flocked tree.
  • Nordic: natural wood, white, felt and a few red accents.
  • Family fun: multi-colour lights, mixed baubles and every handmade decoration the kids have ever made.
Children and pets: use shatterproof baubles on the lower branches, keep glass and small decorations high up, and keep anything with button-cell batteries out of reach. Tinsel and edible decorations can tempt cats and dogs.

Around the house

Hang a wreath on the front door, drape a garland along the mantelpiece or banister, hang the stockings, set out the nativity scene, and dress the Christmas dinner table. Outside, inflatables and light-up figures are guaranteed to make passers-by smile.
